Understanding bird foraging and good foraging toys for birds

What is bird foraging?

The term ‘foraging’ refers to the activities of wild birds when they are locating and gathering food, finding and creating nests etc.

What are examples of bird foraging behaviour?

There are a variety of different bird foraging behaviours that vary from species to species as well as depend on the composition of their natural diet and surroundings.

Whilst foraging, birds have been observed to use all parts of the body: talons, beak, tongue, senses, and more, some of the common behaviours of bird foraging your pet is likely to exhibit in their cage or enclosure include:

  • Scratching

Using either one or two feet, birds dig for food in the ground or trees using their sharp talons.

  • Gleaning

Birds carefully pick out food from the ground, from piles of debris or out of trees using their beaks. Think of parrots ripping bark and timber from trees, pulling seed pods apart, birds on the ground sifting through leaf litter, birds swinging off branches as they chase seeds and insects.

  • Probing

Birds probe their beaks into crevices or sometimes even underground to look and find food. Sometimes they will even reach into holes with their feet.

What makes for good foraging toys for birds?

The point of a foraging toy for birds is to activate and engage their natural instincts. Birds in the wild are kept busy searching for food, swinging from perches and branches, and using their beaks and talons to break food and other items open.

The best bird foraging toys incorporate elements of these activities into their design and production so that your pet is engaged both mentally and physically. The Coco Ship Wheel provides plenty of mental stimulation by offering numerous crevices, surfaces and spots in and on which to hide treats. Physically, your pet bird will be kept busy swinging and perching on it’s many spokes. The durable and hardy Java wood and coconut of the Coco Ship Wheel also allows for your bird to file their nails during the course of play.

Due to the nature of bird play, small bits can be broken off and–while supervision is recommended during use–it’s always recommended that any good foraging toys for birds be made from all natural materials.

What should you look for in your bird toy?

Quality

Cheap foraging toys might seem appealing but chances are they’re cheap for a reason. The health and safety of your bird is important, not to mention the fact that you deserve value for money. Always stick with high quality products.

Quantity

Long lasting bird foraging toys mean you don’t need to buy a high quantity of products. Our Coco Ship Wheel, for example, will last for a long time for your bird.

Variety

The greater the variety of activities and versatility in engagement your bird foraging toy offers the greater enjoyment your bird will have.

Size

The size of your foraging bird toy is important. Small pieces of plastic that break off easily can be a swallowing hazard. At the same time, a badly designed foraging toy could be too big for your bird to use their talons or beak around. Consider the size of your bird and the toy you’re looking at getting.

Play

Consider how your bird is likely to interact with the toy. Is it going to encourage foraging play and mental/physical stimulation?

Price

While your bird may not think price is much a concern, we’re sure you do! There’s no reason for you to shell out obscene amounts of money for your bird toy, thanks to the availability of good foraging toys like the Coco Ship Wheel.

Finally we encourage the following thoughts.

  1. Use your imagination by incorporating treats, greens and your own elements into the toy in imaginative ways. We find this to be very satisfying, and it provides good value out of your investment.
  2. Do not use the same toy all the time. Rotate it with other toys. This will help with the variety for your pet.
